Neurodivergence

In a neurotypical world, it can be challenging to navigate your sensory needs, your emotions, and systemic based communication and social patterns. Relationships, including the relationship you have with yourself can feel overwhelming. It can be tricky for Autistic, ADHD and AuDHD individuals to be authentic in a neurotypical world.

At Roots in Wellness, our neuroinclusive therapists are here to support you in your journey of understanding and embracing your unique neurotype. We take a strength based approach while helping you unmask because “The world needs all kinds of brains.” Temple Grandin

Identity and Self Worth

Whether you take a person based or identity based approach to your neurodivergence, therapy can help you to understand yourself. For many neurodivergent adults, understanding their neurotype involves entering a grieving and healing process. Whether you are diagnosed or undiagnosed, revisiting school, family, friendship and relationship memories can help you validate your experiences and create a new narrative for yourself. Therapy allows you to understand your strengths and superpowers as a neurodivergent.

Relationships

Neurodiverse love has its own unique challenges. Communication and connection can look very different for various neurotypes. Unintentional hurt, pain and trauma can lead to a shared dysregulated nervous system for couples and polycules. Relationship therapy can help you to co-create a pathway forward that includes effective communication strategies while building a safe, respectful and compassionate relationship.

Navigating Neurodivergence at Work

Neurodivergence can make life harder at work. Adhering to timelines, navigating social situations, understanding your relationship with time, or working on a team can lead to additional stress. Therapy can help you to decide whether to disclose or not disclose your neurotype, provide strategies to be productive, get your needs met, and honour a life work balance.

Emotion Regulation and Burnout

Emotional dysregulation, melt downs and burnout are real scenarios for those living with a neurodivergent brain. Therapy can help support symptoms of low mood, anxiety and OCD. Many years of masking can lead to burnout for autistic folks. Through a lens of curiosity, a therapist can help you unmask and navigate a compassionate pathway forward.
