IKIGAI is a Japanese concept that is made up of two words: Iki, meaning “Alive” or “Life” and Gai, meaning “Benefit” or “Worth”. When put together, Ikigai means “That which gives your life worth, meaning or purpose”. This concept is not simply a guide to ‘happiness’; rather it is a practice to help you discover your purpose, your personal mission, and your full potential.
Your IKIGAI is made up of four categories:
This looks at what we do or experience that brings us the most joy.
What you Love
This includes anything you are particularly good at, such as: skills you’ve learned, hobbies you’ve pursued, talents you’ve shown since an early age, etc.
What you are Great at
This involves what others would be willing to pay you for. Think about if and how you could get paid for the things you are passionate about.
What you can get Paid for
In this case, the “world” might be humanity as a whole, a small community you are in touch with, or anything in between. Focus on what would help others beyond your own needs.
What the World Needs
If you can find something in common in all 4 categories, that may be your IKIGAI. Here is a worksheet you could do with guiding questions for each category to help you get started in your journey to find your purpose in life.
